How this journey defined its budgets

Before leaving, this couple set a reference pace of €80 per person per day. That number is a Western Europe travel budget: comfortable long-term travel, not a minimum backpacker trip. It came from their preferences for this journey. Another couple — or the same travellers on a different trip — would pick a different pace.

TripBudget then multiplies that €80 by a cost factor for each stage, so the local daily budget follows prices on the ground. Factors of 1.00 keep the Western Europe rhythm; below 1.00 the destination is cheaper, above 1.00 it is more expensive. Long-haul flights and insurance sit outside stages, as trip-wide general costs. This page does not rebuild a single planned-versus-actual trip total.

Built with privacy in mind

Any future external dataset would be designed around aggregation, anonymisation and minimum sample thresholds before publication.

Those future safeguards would also include:

• Personal identifiers would be removed before publication.
• Publishers would not have access to individual traveller histories.
• Publication would follow applicable privacy rules.
